BIOGRAPHY: I've been a photographer and photojournalist for over three decades. I started my photography career using large and medium format cameras, 35mm film cameras and finally digital DSLR cameras. As a photojournalist and Chief Photographer at The Palm Beach Post newspaper, my focus was on features, news, sports and illustrations.
Between 1978 and 1982, before becoming a photojournalist, I owned a portrait and commercial photography studio in Bardstown Kentucky. I got my first taste of newspaper photography at the local newspaper when the editor asked if I could shoot a few photos for the paper. Seeing my name under one of my photographs on the front page is all it took to hook me for a life-long career of photojournalism. I was hired as the sole photographer at The Kentucky Standard newspaper.
In 1987 I was hired by The Stuart News, a mid-size daily in south Florida where I worked as the Chief Photographer until 1991 when The Palm Beach Post offered me a position as their Chief Photographer.
I had an exciting and satisfying career at The Palm Beach Post for the next 15 years and finally retired from photojournalism.
After leaving newspaper photography, my focus changed to the thrill of shooting Nature, Wildlife and Landscape photography - trying to capture beautiful and unique images. I use all Canon camera gear because I was comfortable with it as a newspaper photographer. I'll mention one real difference between photojournalism and Nature or Fine Art photography, and that's the post processing of images. When shooting for a newspaper, you're bound by strict journalistic constraints. But now, as a photographic artist, I'm perfectly free to express my artistic vision to create beautiful and appealing photographs using whatever tools help meet that goal. I was a Bachelor of Fine Arts student in college, so it's been wonderful expressing my artistic side through my photography.
